Happy 1st Birthday to the Zeus x Stevie litter! They turned a year old on 9/1.
We attended the RRCUS Supported shows in Kennewick, WA in September, the weather was lovely on Friday, freezing cold with wind and raid the rest of the weekend but we persevered! Bennet (Archer x Stevie) won Reserve Winners Bitch two out of the three days. Darla (Xero x Stevie) had her show debut in the 4-6 Beginner Puppy competition and did very well, scoring herself a Puppy Hound Group 2 in the process. Dash injured his foot a couple of days prior, so he was unable to compete, we're hoping he'll be able to compete in the 4-6 Beginner Puppy competition in Wenatchee in October!
Bliss (Archer x Stevie) won a 4-point major back East! Congratulations to Barbara and team Tampo!
We enjoyed from ASFA and AKC lure coursing over Labor Day weekend, Kinley won Best of Breed at the ASFA trial and is only 8 points away from her ASFA Field Championship now. We'll be attending some fall shows, contact us if you'd like to learn where we'll be competing and come meet some lovely Ridgebacks.
The Xero x Stevie puppies are leaving now for their forever families. There is one pet male available, contact us if you are interested in learning more about him.
Cairo had his show debut in June at the Filer, Idaho and Blackfoot, Idaho shows. Cairo won back-to-back Reserve Winners Dog in Filer. He showed well in Blackfoot, but no points just yet. Bennet won the Bred-by class the first two days in Blackfoot, no points just yet in the winners class but her time is coming.
In May we welcomed Stevie's final litter, the D-Litter (Xero x Stevie) into the world, 4 boys and 3 girls, all show ridged and black nosed, no dermoids, no excessive white, no off-bites, 1 minor tail kink. Please welcome Darla, Dante, Daisy, Dazzle, Dexter, Duncan and Dash into the world!
Drogon (Archer x Stevie) tragically left this world after his family was involved in a car accident they were lucky to survive over Memorial Day weekend, our hearts are borken.
Happy 4th Birthday to the Sonny x Kinley litter. Hard to believe it's already 4 years ago these lovely dogs joined our lives. Happy Birthday in Heaven to Atlas and Khan.
Chrome tragically left us in March. We are completely heartbroken and devastated. Chrome was a bright, sweet and loving boy, we were so looking forward to his future here at Desta Ridgebacks and with the breed as a whole. There will never be another like him, rest in peace sweet boy, for we know we never will.
We attended the AKC All-Breed Shows in Puyallup, WA and Portland, OR. Kinley was able to strut herself as a newly anointed Veteran at the Puyallup shows. She earned a 5-point major winning Select Bitch on Saturday, defeating bitches less than half her age. Cairo and Chrome had their first debut in the 4-6 Beginner Puppy feature. Cairo won Best of Breed in a class of FIVE 4 - 6 month old puppies, it was a sight to see with these 5 very green and silly puppies in the ring; Hound Judge, Susie Paine said it was the most fun she'd had all day. Cairo went on to win a 4-6 Beginner Puppy Group 4. Bennet won a very competitive Bred-By-Exhibitor Class under breeder-judge Chris Abrams, we were very honored.
At the Portland shows, Cairo and Chrome once again competed in the 4-6 Beginner Puppy feature. Chrome won best of breed and also won a Hound Group 2! We were so pleased with the performance of these young and aspiring boys.
We relocated to Southern Idaho in late 2018! As much as we sorely miss our friends back in North Carolina, it is nice to be back on the West coast near family. Stay tuned for many adventures to come!
Happy 1st Birthday to the Archer x Stevie litter! They turned a year old on 11/29.

The beginning of 2018 was very busy with raising the Archer x Stevie litter and getting them placed with their wonderful families. I'm so grateful to have been connected with all the exemplary families they were placed with; I truly feel so blessed. I know these puppies will grow into lovely adults and bring these families joy for years to come. Several of the Archer x Stevie puppies were placed into show homes, we are really looking forward to these youngsters entering the show ring later this year!

Owner-Handled Group 1, 2 and 3 wins for Archer this past weekend in McDonald, TN!
Archer is currently #9 Rhodesian Ridgeback in the NOHS rankings! Way to go Archer and Barbara!
It's a very quiet year here at Desta Ridgebacks now with everyone having finished their AKC Championships, we've really been enjoying some respite at the homestead and working on many long forgotten projects.
The Sonny X Kinley litter and Stevie turned 2 years old the end of April and middle of May, so off we all went to qualified vets to have x-rays done for OFA hips and elbows. I'm very pleased to announce that everyone passed their health testing with flying colors! Axle and Stevie were both graded with EXCELLENT hips by the OFA, Archer was graded with GOOD hips by the OFA, Normal elbows for everyone! Axle and Stevie also passed a full OFA Thyroid panel. Health is so important to our program here, so it's very gratifying to see our offspring continue the line of great health established by the many years of conscientious breeding by the breeders of their parents, grandparents, great-grandparents, etc.
Axle and Stevie had a great month in April! Axle won back-to-back majors in Perry, GA; a 5-point major and 3-point major to finish his AKC Championship! Stevie has been mostly relaxing at home since the National Specialty in 2016, this weekend she won a huge 5-point Grand Championship major and had 2 stunning lure coursing runs to complete her Junior Courser title! Look for Stevie this upcoming fall at a coursing field near you!
Our beautiful, sweet, silly Atlas is gone, leaving his entire extended family with broken hearts. Atlas was the very first puppy born to Desta, he was an independent boy with an indomitable will paired with a huge heart for the people he loved. I'll never forget how he wagged his whole body when he saw me, or the look he would give me when I asked him to do something he didn't want to do. I'm thankful to Atlas' family for the incredible care and love they gave him during his life, he wanted for nothing. I'm also thankful to his family for opening up their hearts and home to me, especially during this last bittersweet month. Rest in Peace sweet boy. CH Desta Atlas Holds My World, 4/30/15 - 1/9/17

October started off with a bang in Franklin, Tennessee! A few weeks ago we took another crack at NOTRA Racing! Kinley came in first all races and Stevie second. Atlas really wanted to chase the bunny but just couldn't get over the idea of wearing a muzzle, so only regular coursing for him!
We had a couple of big show weekends this month. First was Greensboro, NC, we just showed Atlas one day and boy did it pay off, Winners Dog, Best of Winners and Best of Breed over the finished specials including a top 25 nationally ranked special for this second major. Stevie showed well but didn't come home with any points.
This past weekend we trekked to Atlanta for the weekend shows, Atlas earned Winners Dog and finished his AKC Championship earning a 3rd major! Atlas is now CH Desta Atlas Holds My World and is my first Bred-by Champion! Stevie won Winners Bitch and Best of Winners for her first major!
The first weekend in July was very exciting for Desta. We met up with Archer's owner in Lima, OH for a fun outdoor show. The first day, Archer won Winners Dog and Best of Winners for his final 2 points needed for his AKC Championship!! Archer is now (pending AKC confirmation) CH Desta's Another Beginning for Tampo. This is just the beginning of Barbara and Archer's exciting journey!
Stevie won back-to-back Winners Bitch win for 4 more point, she just needs her majors now.
Axle won Reserve Winners Dog on Sunday.
The following weekend we showed Axle and Stevie at the big Raisin River Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of Michigan Regional Specialty and Supported show in Monroe, MI. Stevie swept the weekend winning Reserve Winners Bitch all 3 days to 4-point majors! Stevie also won Best Opposite in Puppy Sweepstakes under breeder-judge Theresa West-Holmes on Sunday.
Axle won Reserve Winners Dog to a 5-point major on Sunday.
Both of these exceptional youngsters are on the cusp of winning the majors they need to complete their AKC Championships!
This past weekend we showed Atlas and Stevie in Greenville, SC at the big 4-day circuit. Stevie won Reserve Winners Bitch on Thursday to a 3-point major. On Friday Atlas won Winners Dog and Best of Winners for a 3-point major! Saturday was a RRCUS Supported entry, Archer won a 4-point Select Dog Major toward his Grand Championship!

Atlas won Winners Dog both days for an additional 4 points toward his championship and Stevie won Winners Bitch, Best of Winners and Best Opposite Sex both days for an additional 4 points toward her championship!
Decided to take a few weeks off after Concord. Axle and Stevie showed in Richmond, VA. On June 25, Axle won Winners Dog and Best of Winners for 2 more points! Stevie won reserve.
Atlas and Stevie ventured out to Raleigh, NC to participate in a hound specialty hosted by Mid-Atlantic Hound Association. Stevie won Best in Puppy Sweepstakes on Saturday, Atlas won Best Opposite in Puppy Sweepstakes to Stevie. Both showed well in conformation as well and they came home on Sunday with their first 2 AKC Championship points!
Axle Showed in Concord, NC this past weekend; Saturday Axle won his second Best of Breed award toward his Championship for another point! On Sunday Axle won Reserve Winners Dog, the judge had very nice comments about him, saying he was 'an exceptional puppy' - we know it's just a matter of time before Axle wins his majors!
Kinley did one day of lure coursing in Reidsville, NC! She ran well and had a ton of fun, we took Sunday off and we're still recovering from head colds, the weather was beautiful and really perks our spirits up!

Archer is 100% owner-handled by his devoted owner, Barbara.
Stevie had her debut at an International Show in Charlotte in March, these shows are great for fun and practice for dogs of any ages. Stevie showed well and got best Ridgeback puppy at all 4 shows, then she blew us away with taking Puppy Hound Group 1 at all 4 shows as well with good competition! She didn't stop there, she came away with 2 Best Puppy in Show wins and 1 Reserve Best Puppy in Show win! What a debut!
Axle won his first AKC Championship points showing in Raleigh, NC the last weekend in March! On Friday Axle went BEST OF BREED over the #2 Rhodesian Ridgeback in the nation for his first 2 points! Archer showed in Tennessee this weekend as well and won 2 points on Friday and another 3 point major on Sunday! Archer is just 3 singles away from his Championship.
Sonny and Kinley's 3 show boys took a trip to the big show in Atlanta. Thursday Atlas won Reserve Winners Dog to the major, Friday Archer won Reserve Winners Dog to the major and Saturday and Sunday Axle won Reserve Winners Dog to the majors. While they were the groomsmen all weekend, the boys showed well and it's a testament to their exceptional promise. It's common for nice examples of the breed to win reserves to majors when they are young, so we know this is just a sign of greater times ahead!
Kenza earned her AKC S.T.A.R. Puppy award! We're so proud of Kristen and Kenza, keep up the great work!
It is with very heavy hearts that we announce the passing of one of the A Litter puppies; Khan (litter name Apollo) moved with his family to Missouri and contracted a rare disease specific to that area called Canine Dysautonomia. This disease kills approximately 250 dogs each year in Wyoming, Kansas and Missouri; the fatality rate is near 100%. Because there is no human equivalent and this epidemic is not nationwide the funding for research is very poor. Please consider a tax deductible donation to the Wyoming, Kansas or Missouri Universities conducting research on Canine Dysautonomia.
January was pretty quiet at Desta. We did some ASFA lure coursing January 16th and 17th, Kinley brought home another 18 points toward her ASFA Field Championship, just 16 more to go!
2015 RRCUS SPECIALTY NEWS!!
What a whirlwind! Kinley and her son Axle went to the 2015 RRCUS National Specialty in Warwick, RI this month. Axle competed in the 4-6 Month Puppy competition and was almost pulled for the cut, but then puppy wiggles took over. Later the judge had very nice things to say about him. He was a spectacular traveler and made lots of new friends!
Kinley competed in the Triathlon, combining scores from obedience, triathlon conformation and lure coursing scores. She scored well in Conformation and Lure Coursing, but wasn't in the mood for the off-leash heeling exercise in Obedience and did not receive a Qualifying score. She showed very well in Best of Breed and I'll be adding photos to her page soon. But the best day of all was Lure Coursing, Kinley won the Open B Stake for a 5 POINT MAJOR making her a new FIELD CHAMPION and DUAL CHAMPION!!! But then she went on to run for Best in Field and getting a tied scored with her niece Kolé for the top prize! Kinley ran out of steam on the last leg of the course in the Best in Field run-off, not bad for a girl just 3 months out of the whelping box! She far surpassed my expectations. GO KINLEY! She also received her Advanced Canine Good Citizen award!
The Sonny x Kinley show puppy boys made their debut this past weekend at the Rhodesian Ridgeback Club of the United States supported show, "The Christmas Classic" in Winston-Salem, NC.
Atlas showed well in 6-9 Puppy Sweepstakes and Bred-by Exhibitor on Friday, he stayed home on Saturday and Sunday due to being under the weather, get better soon Atlas!
Axle showed well all 3 days with 3 different handlers! Friday and Sunday he won the 6-9 Puppy Class and got a good look and consideration from the judges. His owner Ashleigh showed him in both Sweepstakes and regular judging on Sunday and did fantastic with him, just a matter of time before team Axle earns their first points!
Archer won Best Opposite in Puppy Sweepstakes on Friday, Best in Puppy Sweepstakes on Saturday and Sunday! On Saturday he also won Winners Dog for his first points, a 3 point major, all 100% handled by his owner-handler Barbara. Thank you breeder-judges Dr. Martha B. Anderson and Ms. Ann O'Mara and judges Dr. James W. Edwards and Dr. H. Scott Kellogg for awarding Archer!
Kahn received his AKC STAR Puppy award! First title in the litter, way to go Khan!
Kinley finished out the year with 3 days of ASFA Lure Coursing in Fairburn, GA. She won the Open stake every day and came home with another Best of Breed award and another 1/3rd knocked off her ASFA Field Championship!
Not much on the home front for November so far. Been enjoying the nice warm fall weather and been doing lots of outings with the dogs and many of the other puppy families. Desta Ridgebacks would like you wish everyone a very Happy Thanksgiving in the upcoming weeks! We hope this time of year finds you well.
HAPPY 6 MONTH BIRTHDAY TO THE A LITTER! (SONNY X KINLEY)
October has been a quiet month since returning from the National Specialty in Warwick, RI. Kinley tried Oval Racing with the NOTRA organization for the first time and came in 1st place both days earning 2 ORC (Oval Racing Championship) points toward her ORC title! Now that it's fall and things have cooled off there are several lure coursing trials coming up, we're looking forward to seeing how Kinley does now competing as a Field Champion.
Sonny, the sire of our A Litter, completed his AKC Grand Championship on October 18th taking Best of Breed over several ranked specials! Then he went on to win a Hound Group 3!! We're so proud of Susan and Sonny!
Vida had some great wins in Raleigh, NC over Labor Day weekend! She won Winners Bitch and Best Opposite Sex both days she was entered. Just 2 more points to go before she's a new Champion!
I added a lot of information to my Puppies page that details what is put into every single litter we produce, the list of lengthy, but worth it to produce the healthiest puppies possible.
One more practice weekend to go for Kinley and Axle before we head to the RRCUS National Specialty in Rhode Island! We're very excited and have some lofty goals for Miss Kinley. Keep your paws crossed for us!
The last show weekend before the Specialty went wonderful! Kinley was entered on Saturday, she won Best of Breed, Best of Breed Owner-Handled and went on to win a Owner-Handled Group 3! Her son Axle won Best 4-6 Puppy in Breed and a 4-6 Puppy Hound Group 1! The next day Vida won her 4th major and became a New Champion!
August has been a quiet month. With all the hustle and bustle earlier this year with the Sonny X Kinley litter I wanted to take most of the summer off from dog shows and events.
We headed up to Leesburg, VA August 15th and 16th to get Kinley back in the lure coursing field before the National. On Saturday, Kinley was in the lead after the preliminary run; she was on fire like she'd hadn't taken a 6 month break for puppies. After the final run, she came second in the Open stake, 1 point behind first. On Sunday, Kinley again was in the lead after the preliminary run and Chakotay had the best run he's done in 5 years! Unfortunately, Kinley blew out a front pad during her preliminary run and I pulled her for the rest of the trial. Until next time!
July has been very busy so far with the Sonny X Kinley litter puppies leaving for their new homes. I've updated their page with their new call names if they have one, and their shiny new AKC Registered names. In honor of it being the "A" Litter, each registered name has a word that begins with A after our Kennel Name of Desta. Among the dozens of applications I received, I'm so pleased today to be connected with 6 wonderful families that I feel a deep camaraderie and connection with. I know these babies will be loved and cared for beyond words and that we'll all be in each others lives for decades to come.
I also updated the Ridgeback Info and Links page with new information.
Not much going on this month except for raising the Sonny X Kinley puppies. This has been a very sweet litter, it's been fun watching them grow and develop, even if they do make the biggest messes ever.
Probably best to mention that the waiting list for the 2016 Litter is piling up! I highly encourage you to apply if you are interested in a puppy from my litter next summer.
The Sonny x Kinley puppies are here! Born the evening of April 30. 7 in total, 5 boys and 2 girls. Mom and babies are doing well.
So far April has been very busy with preparations to bring the Sonny X Kinley litter into the world at the end of the month. Getting to know the families on our waiting list, they are all so delightful and it's been a pleasure to be introduced to them through a common love of Ridgebacks and I'm honored to have the opportunity to become acquainted with these families.
Seze passed the ATTS Temperament Test!
Waiting, waiting and more waiting! Kinley has been bred to Sonny and now we wait! Kinley will visit the reproductive vet in a couple of weeks to confirm pregnancy.
Pregnancy confirmed between Sonny and Kinley! Litter is due April 30th. The waiting list for pet puppies is full, only show prospect applications are being accepted.
Another quiet month so far. I haven't planned many activities due to Kinley being so close to coming into season; she's been exhibiting signs of her upcoming season for a couple of weeks now. If it holds off, we'll do a little Lure Coursing in about a week, but from the way things are shaping up I think she'll be in before that.
I'll be closing applications for the Sonny X Kinley litter shortly as I currently have an abundant amount of applicants and there are so many wonderful families that have applied, I feel very blessed, these puppies are going to have some wonderful families to live with.
Kinley is in season! Hope to have some puppy news soon!
Things are quiet so far for 2015, except that we've all still been waiting for Kinley to come into season for 3 months. Initial plans were to skip this next cycle and breed Kinley in the fall assuming she'd cycle every 10 months. It seems that now she's mature, she's opted to have longer cycles, so Kinley will be bred in early 2015 when she comes into season. Stay tuned for puppy news!
Kinley just ran her first ASFA trial! She earned her first 30 points toward her ASFA Field Championship; won Best of Breed on Saturday and 3rd in the Open Stake on Sunday! Because this is the first ASFA trial of the year, this means that Kinley is currently the #1 ASFA Rhodesian Ridgeback! Go Kinley!
Kinley went AKC Lure Coursing the weekend of December 13th & 14th and won back to back 3 point majors toward her Field Championship! Go Kinley! Chakotay chased the bunny too and did a great job, maybe one day he'll run a full course!
Kinley went AKC Lure coursing the weekend of December 27th & 28th and won the Open Stake both days! To date Kinley has 11 of the 15 point needed for her Field Championship with both majors under her belt. This girl loves to chase the bunny!
Kinley competed at the Christmas Classic RRCUS Supported Shows in Winston-Salem, NC. She won Select Bitch on both Friday and Saturday, and Best Opposite Sex on Sunday earning her 4 points toward her Grand Championship!
Kinley ran 3 out of 3 qualifying legs at a Coursing Ability Test with Piedmont Kennel Club on November 1st and 2nd! She loved it and will be participating in AKC Lure Coursing events for sighthounds later this month. This earned her the new title of CA! Chakotay also earned a qualifying leg toward his CA title!
Kinley earned her third qualifying legs toward her Rally Novice title in Concord, NC! This gives her a new title of RN!
Kinley also started her Lure Coursing career on November 22nd in Camden, SC. She won the Open Stake and earned the first 2 point toward her Field Championship and Dual Championship!
Vida earned another Reserve to a 4 point major in Savannah, GA. Almost there!
Vida won her class on Saturday and took Reserve Winners Bitch to a 4 point major at Augusta Kennel Club! Her litter sister Vivian was Winners Bitch, her litter brother Vance won Breed, so it was all in the family. No wins on Sunday but she showed great.
Kinley won 2 qualifying legs toward her Rally Novice title at Augusta Kennel Club. Her Sunday performance was spot on, scoring a 99 out of 100 and a 3rd place overall in a large class of very competitive dogs.
Seze is a new Grand Champion! He won Best of Breed under esteemed judge Betty-Anne Stenmark at Moore County Kennel Club Of North Carolina, completing his Grand Championship with 4 majors!
Kinley is a new Champion!!! After a month off, right out of the gate, Kinley won Winners Bitch for a 4 point major on Thursday in Atlanta, GA! Deepest gratitude to judge Roberta Campbell for recognizing and pointing Kinley for a second time. This now makes Kinley, CH Jesmyster's La Joie Belle At Desta, CGC STAR!
July was a very busy month for Kinley!
June 29, 2014 at Dayton Kennel Club, Inc.; Kinley won Winners Bitch and Best Opposite Sex over 2 bitch specials for a 3 point major! Judge was Bonnie Linnell Clarke which is especially exciting as this judge gave Seze Best of Breed at RRCUS Supported show in Winston-Salem, NC in December 2013 over ranked specials and Kinley Reserve Winners Bitch with a nice entry of quality bitches. She had great things to say about both dogs then.
